Happy Birthday Sarah

Today we celebrate the birth of a very special little girl.

One afternoon after her diagnosis, Sarah requested that I make her a birthday cake. Although it was not her birthday, we decorated the cake with candles and sang the Happy Birthday song. Her request for cakes continued. Each Monday became the day to celebrate another birthday. Here is a video clip of one such celebration. Notice Sarah's bright smile and the twinkle in her eye as she anticipates blowing out the candles.  Click here to view.

Today we celebrated Sarah's birthday by lighting a birthday cake, decorating her memorial bench and releasing balloons with handwritten messages into the January sky.

A sweet friend delivered a batch of homemade cookies with candy chips in Sarah's favorite color.

Loving grandparents decorate Sarah's grave

This day brings memories of a beautiful spirit who has touched our lives and will always remain with us.

"What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose,
for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us."
~Helen Keller

Oh I love how Sarah followed Maren's lead to lick the frosting from the candles! So precious. We're thinking of you today.

While our hearts are saddened as we miss dear Sarah on this, her fourth birthday, we feel so blessed to have her as a member of our family. She taught us so many important lessons in the short time she was on earth and continues to inspire us to live the best we can until we are with her again. Thank you for this beautiful post and the sweet video of our angel.

What beautiful, touching memories. What a sweet and tender moment to see Maren writing a note to her sister. The bench must be such a peaceful place for you. I am glad you were able to be there. I am thinking of you!

I love how Sarah LOVED to celebrate her birthday. That should be a lesson to all of us. Celebrate life, families and little things. (Like blowing out birthday candles!) I think of her great courage and her happy smile and laugh. Thank you Sarah for your great example.

That was precious. I celebrated Sarah on her birthday by saying yes to the kids when they asked to go to the park and ignored my plans to do other things.

Happy Birthday Sarah... your family loves you sooo much. They are strong, beautiful, and very great examples.

What a great way to honor your daughter's life. She is sooo precious! What a cute girl. I'm sure she inspires more than you will EVER know! I'm going to go watch your video now. Just know I am thinking about you and that your family is in my prayers. I think that regardless of WHEN you lose a loved ones, the best thing we can do, is pray for one another! I love the bench that your family has!!! Aren't grandparents the best- so sweet they decorated for her. Just wanted to let you know that you are cared about and that Sarah is cared about... even if, we've never met in person- a feel a connection. Much Love, Jess

Christine, I have loved looking over this post the past few days. I wish I could have been there for the birthday balloon release. Amelia was having a difficult day yesterday and needed to spend some time in her room. In my mind I pictured Sarah comforting and calming her. What a blessing it is for us to have the knowledge that she is close by when we need her most. Love you, Carrie

What a beautiful memory to have of Sarah's love for Birthday Cake. That memory will forever leave a warm spot in your heart.
I loved the moments that are captured on video of both girls enjoying the frosting off the candles.
