Who is Your Favorite Artist?

I was introduced to the artwork of Mary Cassatt while attending Brigham Young University.  Mary's intriguing life story along with her many beautiful portraits have always captured my interest.

Mary was born in the 1840's to a family of high social standing.  She was given opportunities for education which enriched her life.  Many women in her day were discouraged from pursing careers.  Her father did not approve of her desire to become a painter.  This led Mary to sign many of her famous works by the name of Mary Stevenson.  Although she faced many obstacles in her life, Mary showed great courage and determination to improve her skills as a painter, even if it meant for her to go against the will of her father.  She studied and painted in Spain, Rome and Belgium then permanently made her home in Paris.  Mary spent her life painting until she became very ill which lead her to blindness.

Mary was an impressionist artist.  While many impressionists focused on painting landscapes, she is famous for her portraits especially those with women and children.  This is the reason I am drawn to her art.  She captures in such beautiful ways the everyday, household work of women.  The ability to capture such intimate moments brought her the most happiness and pleasure in life.  Below are some of my favorite portraits by Mary Cassatt (courtesy of http://www.marycassatt.org/).

I am emotionally drawn to this one.  It reminds me of the precious months I cared for my sick little Sarah.  The mother, wearing black seems somewhat solemn.  The little girl wearing pure white appears ill with flushed cheeks, but finds comfort in her mother's arms.

I hope to purchase a print of one of these portraits for the baby's nursery.  It will serve as a reminder of the sacred calling of motherhood and the gift I have been given to mother five of Heavenly Father's children.

A Fresh New Look

We are making room for another baby.  The guest bedroom will soon be filled with a crib, pink blankets and baby gear.  You could say that I am nesting.  My energy is back and I'm ready to get organized and prepare for our arrival in early May.

Maren's room has taken on a fresh new look.  She inherited the guest room bed and is very content in her charming yellow haven.  We found the perfect bedspread in her favorite color and completed the look with a touch of pink.  The decorations in her room have special significance to both of us.  We have enjoyed working together on this project and are pleased with the end result.  Here are a few pictures of her new room.

Maren wanted to decorate with flowers and find a suitable spot to display her tea set.

This heirloom was hand embroidered in the 1950's by Maren's grandmother, Renee.  The sweet sentiment stitched on linen will hopefully influence the way she lives each day of her life.

A chair for reading and putting on shoes.

Maren stores her hair bows in a glass canister.

I created this picture using a butterfly punch and scrapbook paper.  The idea came from this blog.  There are a few special reminders of Sarah in the room.

My good friend Hillary hand painted dragonflies and butterflies to add a little grace and life to the yellow walls.

A place for everything, and everything in its place.

A little something I embroidered several years ago.  I framed it when Maren was born and it has hung on her bedroom wall ever since.

Little "Troublemaker"

“A two-year old is kind of like having a blender, but you don't have a top for it.”  -Jerry Seinfeld

Our family is embracing the charm and challenges of a two-year old.  Nathan and Maren are incredibly patient with "Little Sue," who acts her age so very well.  She entertains us with her unpredictable ups and downs, determination and passion over just about everything!

Sarah's Day

Today our family fondly remembers our precious angel daughter and sister.  I imagine Sarah as a beautiful five-year-old with big, bright eyes and shoulder-length hair--showering us with her sweetness, reading books on her own, writing her name, helping me in the kitchen, dressing up with Caroline and Maren, dancing, picking flowers, coloring pretty pictures and catching frogs with Nathan.

This afternoon we made sugar cookies cut into the shape of a butterfly.  The children decorated them with frosting and sprinkles.  Some of Sarah's little friends also sent her precious pictures and birthday wishes.

We tied five balloons to Sarah's bench and released five additional balloons with special messages written just for her.

Later this morning, a surprise awaited us at Sarah's bench.  My dear friend Brenda and her sweet family had planted two crape myrtle trees next to the bench.  We will find joy and satisfaction caring for these young trees and watching them grow.  They will add such beauty to Sarah's special spot.  Thank you Hylton family for your love and generosity!

This morning Maren placed a simple handmade note for Sarah on the kitchen table.  Her words echo the feelings in our hearts today.

"Happy Birthday to someone special named Sarah"
Dear Sarah,
Happy Birthday!  You turned five years old today!  I love you so much with all my heart.  My family really, really, really misses you!
Love, Maren

During her last few months, Sarah insisted on celebrating her birthday almost weekly.  Videos and pictures of these "pretend" birthday parties have become memorable keepsakes for our family.  We love to watch the joy in Sarah's face as she hears the "Happy Birthday" song and eats birthday cake.

Favorite Modes of Transportation

Caroline's going places...

on the bike with her daddy,

 riding solo on her trike,

or galloping!
She recently learned how to gallop and now prefers it to walking.  Inside or outside, this is her favorite way of getting around.

Caroline considers her pink helmet a stylish accessory.

A Photograph to Treasure

A friend sent me this photograph she had taken of Sarah snuggled up close to Brian at Maren's ballet recital in April 2008.  As I look at the picture I am reminded of Sarah's love for Brian.  She would often tell him, "You my best friend."

I treasure every photograph of my beautiful little girl.  To be given one that I have never seen before is indescribably special.  Thank you Melanie, it was such a sweet surprise to receive this month.  It will be five years on the 16th since we welcomed Sarah into our family.  I will consider this a birthday gift from her to me.

Setting Goals for the New Year

I find it so refreshing to begin a new year.  For many it is a time to reflect on the past and look forward to the future with optimism and faith.  Perhaps you have made your list of personal goals and now hope to accomplish them over the course of the next twelve months.  Today I was reminded of this helpful, inspired counsel regarding New Year's resolutions given by Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.  Best wishes to each of you as you embark on this new year!

"First, think about your life and set your priorities.  Find some quiet time regularly to think deeply about where you are going and what you will need to do to get there.  Jesus, our exemplar, often 'withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed' (Luke 5:16).  We need to do the same thing occasionally to rejuvenate ourselves spiritually as the Savior did.  Write down the tasks you would like to accomplish each day.  Keep foremost in mind the sacred covenants you have made with the Lord as you write down your daily schedules."

"Second, set short-term goals that you can reach.  Set goals that are well balanced, not too many nor too few, and not too high nor too low.  Write down your attainable goals and work on them according to their importance.  Pray for divine guidance in your goal setting"  (Elder M. Russel Ballard ~ Ensign, May 1987, 14).
