Three Cheers for Our Bear!

Nathan was awarded the Bear badge this week at Cub Scout Pack Meeting.  A few of his favorite achievements include: making homemade oatmeal cookies, going on a camping trip with dad, planning a family outing to Galveston's Stewart beach, and watching a BYU football game on television.  Way to go Nathan!

That same evening I dusted off my seventeen-year-old cheerleading sweater vest and taught the Activity Day girls some cheers, stunts and a dance.   Needless to say there was a little soreness the morning after.  The pom-poms and vest are back up in the attic where they belong.

While rummaging through old high school memorabilia I came across this classic photograph taken in 1991 with my cheerleading sisters.

I am on the left with the white headband, next to my twin sister Carrie.  Thanks to Mom and Dad who paid for our lovely perms!

Brian's Appearance on Morning Television

I am excited to share with you a 6-minute segment that aired this morning on Great Day Houston (the local version of the TODAY show).  Debra Duncan interviews Houston Independent School District's Superintendent and Aramark's handsome and articulate General Manager, Brian!  Aramark is introducing a new program called, "First Class Breakfast"--a health initiative to improve overall wellness and nutrition in Houston's school-age children.  They have taken on Michelle Obama's challenge to improve the quality of food in their school cafeterias as well as educate children on making healthier food choices.  Click here to view.

Saturday at Sheldon Lake Park

Our neighborhood is surrounded by beautiful nature reserves and parks.  This afternoon we drove a short distance to explore Sheldon Lake Park where acres of untouched marsh and swamplands as well as nature paths and a variety of wildlife live (including alligators).  I brought along the camera hoping to capture an image of a swamp-swimming gator.  As we entered the park we found this sign which reminded us to "Be Alligator Wise!"

Brian gives a brief tutorial on what species we might encounter on our nature walk.

Paths led us along our way.  We came to a fork and chose the "the one less traveled by."

Caroline is eager to see an armadillo.  I'm keeping an eye out for alligators.

Nathan hears a little rustling and takes a closer look, could it be a gator?

No such luck.  However, he finds shells which seem to satisfy him...

...and wild mushrooms

...and a Texas-size ant hill.

Our path led us to a landmark: "The Bent Pinetree"

Maren is fascinated with the variety of leaves

Caroline enjoys walking next to her big sister, gathering sticks and leaves along the way.

We enjoyed our nature walk and were impressed with the wide range of vegetation and wildlife. However, to our disappointment, there were no alligators.

Drink Your Veggies

Just like her sister Sarah, Caroline has discovered how good she feels after a refreshing drink of V8 juice.

I have found if you introduce this drink to toddlers, their little taste buds will grow to love it! Straws add extra entertainment but sometimes a red mess.

Happy Birthday Sarah

Today we celebrate the birth of a very special little girl.

One afternoon after her diagnosis, Sarah requested that I make her a birthday cake. Although it was not her birthday, we decorated the cake with candles and sang the Happy Birthday song. Her request for cakes continued. Each Monday became the day to celebrate another birthday. Here is a video clip of one such celebration. Notice Sarah's bright smile and the twinkle in her eye as she anticipates blowing out the candles.  Click here to view.

Today we celebrated Sarah's birthday by lighting a birthday cake, decorating her memorial bench and releasing balloons with handwritten messages into the January sky.

A sweet friend delivered a batch of homemade cookies with candy chips in Sarah's favorite color.

Loving grandparents decorate Sarah's grave

This day brings memories of a beautiful spirit who has touched our lives and will always remain with us.

for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us."

Four Years

Four years ago this week, I was greatly anticipating the birth of our third child.  The nursery was well equipped with diapers, clothes, blankets, a rocking chair and crib.  All it lacked was a sweet, most precious little girl.

Sarah Adleen was named after her second great-grandmothers whom I admire and love dearly.  She was a beautiful baby with thick, dark hair and big eyes.  Her angelic, happy and patient personality brought such joy into my life.

Sarah was welcomed with love and tenderness by Maren and Nathan.  From the first day of her life these two have simply adored her.  The memory of Sarah is engraved on their young hearts.

Not an hour goes by that I do not think of my angel daughter.  I am so grateful to know that she is well and happy, full of life, intelligence, grace, beauty, and love.  How blessed I am to be her eternal mother.

THE CORD
We are connected,
My child and I, by
An invisible cord
Not seen by the eye.

It's not like the cord
That connects us 'til birth
This cord can't be seen
By any on Earth.

This cord does it's work
Right from the start.
It binds us together
Attached to my heart.

I know that it's there
Though no one can see
The invisible cord
From my child to me.

The strength of this cord
Is hard to describe.
It can't be destroyed
It can't be denied.

It's stronger than any cord
Man could create
It withstands the test
Can hold any weight.

And though you are gone,
Though you're not here with me,
The cord is still there
But no one can see.

It pulls at my heart
I am bruised... I am sore,
But this cord is my lifeline
As never before.

I am thankful that God
Connects us this way
A mother and child
Death can't take it away!

Happy New Year

Brian and I surprised the children on Christmas with airline tickets to Utah to spend a week with our extended family.  Quite a lot of snow has fallen since our arrival, providing great pleasure for the children.  We have built snowmen, snowforts, thrown snowballs and have had such fun sledding!  It has been especially nice to be with family as we end this difficult year.  On New Years Eve my parents, siblings and their spouses gathered together for a delicious fondue dinner.  We enjoyed an evening of games, laughter and visiting.  It was a wonderful way to ring in 2010.
