As a child I remember my grandmother and mother preparing this delicious side dish for our Thanksgiving dinners. Over the years this recipe has become a Thanksgiving tradition for our family. Recipes that are passed down from generation to generation make this holiday meal so meaningful, especially for women who labor for hours planning and preparing a feast that will be enjoyed and remembered.
Yams and Apples
6 medium yams
5 golden delicious apples
1 cup sugar
2 cups water
3 Tablespoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon salt
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1 cube of butter
Boil yams and cool. Place peeled, sliced yams and peeled, sliced apples alternating in casserole dish starting with apples. Combine remaining ingredients. Cook until thickened then pour over yams and apples. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour. *I cut the yams in half and boil them with the skin on. Allow them to cool for an hour or so, then with a small knife remove the skins and slice.

Thanksgiving is not Thanksgiving without the yams and apples! I love the picture of Grandma and mom enjoying each other while cooking the feast. What a keepsake! I had a sweet dream of Sarah a few nights ago and she has been in my thoughts continuously since then. Isabelle's goldfish, Snorkel, was appearing colorless and floating upside down in the fish bowl this morning. She started to cry and as I comforted her she said, "Mom, he'll be okay because his spirit is with Sarah."
Yum, Christine. I will be printing this and adding this to my November Menu. I cherish family traditions and many to circle around food...Missing you today and thinking of your good example to me.
You look so much like your mother in this picture!!Miss you
I have helped my mother-in-law make this same recipe! Very tasty. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I have not noticed the resemblance between you and your mother before, what a great photo!
I think mom still has that apron! Classic photo, Christine. There is only one problem with the picture: where in the heck are we and why aren't we helping? You and Carrie were probably up doing your hair. HA HA Teenagers....
LOVE THE PICTURE!
